Dear SES Families,
Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! As I head into my ninth year as Principal at Saugatuck, I am more excited than ever for our work with your children and our partnership together with you. Saugatuck is a very special place, and we can’t wait to welcome your child(ren) next week.
Please join me in welcoming the following new staff members to Saugatuck: Lauren Turner (Corcoran) is our new third grade teacher. Most recently, Lauren worked at KHS and got married this August! Loren Halleran is our new Special Education Teacher and has spent a large portion of her career teaching in California. We welcome Taylor Gambella as our new Building Substitute, and she will be joined by Lauren Sganga who is returning this year. We will also host two student teachers this year: Madeline Schlossberg and Alexandra Coclin. Lastly, Stacey Vulcano will return this fall and will fill in for Special Education Teacher Lindsay Vochis, until she returns from her maternity leave.
Over the summer, our school secretary Christine Boyrer made the decision to pursue an opportunity closer to home. We hope to be able to introduce a new face in the front office, soon.
Leading our SES PTA this year is Amy Herrera who will serve as Interim President, and Kathy Whee who serves as Co-President. We encourage everyone to become members of our SES PTA. Thank you to our SES PTA for all of their support of Saugatuck!
Here is some additional information to help you prepare for the school year:
Those students who ordered SchoolKidz school supply kits will receive them at Meet Your Teacher Day. If you did not order a SchoolKidz kit you can purchase supplies from this list and have your child bring them to school.
Students have the option to purchase lunch at school and will have access to different lunch choices. It is important to set up a MySchoolBucks account for the debit system and monitor your balance regularly. More information about My School Bucks can be found at this link: My School Bucks letter. Lunch menus can be found on the district website. From time to time, last minute changes are made by Chartwells, so it is important to always check the WPS website for the day’s lunch choices.
Some families may benefit from accommodations for Free & Reduced Lunch and the district has a procedure in place to assist these families. The Superintendent will soon be emailing a packet of information should your family be interested in this information, and it can also be found on the district website here. A new application must be completed every year, if you are interested in this opportunity.
Classroom Assignments, Meet Your Teacher Day, and the First Day of School
Classroom Assignments will be announced tomorrow, Tuesday, August 23 at 2:00pm, through PowerSchool. You must log into PowerSchool to see your child’s teacher assignment.
On Monday, August 29, we will host a Meet Your Teacher visit at SES:
- New Family Orientation from 9:45-10:30am (Courtyard)
- Kindergarten Bus Orientation from 10:00-10:30am (Auditorium)
- Meet the Teacher: Grades K, 1 & 2 from 10:30-11:00am
- Meet the Teacher: Grades 3, 4, and 5 from 11:00-11:30am
Tuesday, August 30 is the first day of school! Please note that we will have additional staff meeting buses, and at the side door for parent drop-off, to walk students to their classes.
School Dismissal Manager
We will be using School Dismissal Manager again this year to keep track of all dismissal plans. An email with more specific information regarding this system will be sent to you later this week. Please note that if you are planning to pick your child up early, you must note that in SDM and your child must be picked up by 2:45pm so as not to interfere with our end of day dismissal process. Dismissal is a very busy time, and to ensure student safety, we need to limit any unnecessary interruptions in our front office.
Bus Routes will be published on the WPS district website later this week.
Westport Public Schools Parent Handbook
The Parent Handbook for the Westport Public Schools can be found on the district website. Please review this handbook as it contains important information regarding policies and procedures for the district. Please be sure to look at the attendance policy information, as well as policies regarding cell phones/smart watches, among others.
