The Saugatuck Scoop - 8/30/24
This week we shine our Saugie Spotlight on…Coffee with Principal Messler! Come join us Tuesday, September 10th at 10:00 AM at the Compo Beach Pavilion for a relaxed and informal chat with our principal— enjoy free coffee or bring your own! This is a perfect chance to ask Principal Messler your questions, hear what’s new at the school, or simply enjoy a casual conversation over a cup of coffee.
Rain or shine, we’ll be covered under the pavilion. No beach parking pass is needed. Just let the attendant at the entrance know you’re there for the PTA coffee. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect!

Volunteer Opportunities
PTA Membership and School Directory
If you haven’t already, head over to the Membership Toolkit and become a member of the PTA! As a PTA member, you'll have the opportunity to volunteer for enriching events around school that let you be part of your child’s school experience AND you’ll gain access to the school directory. Please note that you must be a member of the PTA in order to volunteer at school and to access the directory. Membership is $35 per family. Click here to become a member of the SES PTA!
Check out a quick Membership Toolkit app tutorial from last year here.
Become an SES Art Room Volunteer
A few volunteers are needed this year to help display students' artwork and prepare materials for our wonderful art teacher, Miss Lasto! This is a year-long commitment, and Art Volunteers typically come in once or twice per month for hour-long shifts. This volunteer team also hangs the annual SES Art Show in the spring. Please only sign up if you are available Mondays 10-11 AM and/or Thursdays 1-2 PM, and have already registered for the PTA for the 2024-25 school year.
Interested? Please reach out to Jess Randi Murray to get involved.
Become a Room Parent
Click here to sign up! Room Parent volunteers are limited to 3 per class. If you don’t see a slot available, they have been filled. This is a year-long commitment requiring timely communication to classroom families on behalf of the class teacher, the PTA and other administrative partners. The Room Parent will also have the opportunity to help schedule, plan, and provide support in-person for various activities throughout the year! *You must be a member of the PTA to volunteer as a room parent. Click HERE to register for the PTA for the 2024-2025 school year.
Please note: Training for ALL Room Parents will be held in-person on Thursday, September 19 at 9am in the SES Cafeteria.
*In order to give the opportunity for more families to participate, we ask that parents of multiple children in grades K-5 please only sign up for one Room Parent role at this time.
Questions? Reach out to Courtney Fuchs (K-2) or Jaclyn Carbino (3-5).
Kindergarten Families: Sign up for recess duty
All interested parents/caregivers of kindergarteners have an opportunity to sign up for two recess duty slots between September and December. Click here for more information and to sign up.
Questions? Reach out to Christine Smith.
News, Updates and Reminders
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
With two weeks of school under our belts, we want to make sure we’re following best practices to help our school arrival and dismissal processes go smoothly. During car arrival and dismissal all drivers are asked to stay in their car and have their child enter and exit the vehicle on the passenger side, which is closest to the curb. If your child is unable to get out of the car on their own, please park and walk them over to the walk-up area (please note the crosswalk is closed during drop off and pick up).
The school will use the School Dismissal Manager again this year to keep track of all dismissal plans. Read about registering and setting up SDM here. If you are picking your child up from school, make sure to open the SDM app and tap the ‘Fast Lane’ button once you arrive. You should also have a sign with your child’s name, grade and teacher on the passenger side of the dashboard. If you walk up, please have this sign in hand. You can reuse your sign all year. Please note that if you are planning to pick your child up early, you must note that in SDM and your child must be picked up by 2:45pm (and 10:15am on early dismissal days) so as not to interfere with the end of day dismissal process. Dismissal is a very busy time, and to ensure student safety, they need to limit any unnecessary interruptions in the front office.
Principal Messler’s latest communication about arrival and dismissal procedures can be found here.
My School Bucks App for School Lunches
As in previous years, the My School Bucks app is available to fund your student’s school lunch. Please review the letter sent by the district to familiarize yourself with the app. You can find a helpful FAQ section on page 5 of the letter here.
NEW THIS YEAR - Attendance Monitor
Attendance Monitor allows elementary parents and guardians to report absences and late arrivals in Powerschool, eliminating the need to call the Attendance Line. Please read more about how to set up and use Attendance Monitor here. Beginning October 1 all absences will be reported through PowerSchool Attendance Monitor. Please continue to use School Dismissal Manager for afternoon dismissal transportation changes.
